Floor Drain Backup in Poway: What We Removed and Tested
A Poway floor-drain job shows why removing debris, flushing the line and checking drainage matter—and why a recommended strainer is a separate follow-up.

When a mechanical-room floor drain backed up at a Poway property on August 27, 2026, standing water had spread across the room. John Ciampoli Plumbing cleared the blockage, retrieved debris and checked drainage under continued water flow. The work record also identifies a practical follow-up: adding a floor-drain strainer.

What the technician found and removed
The technician accessed the mechanical room and ran a drain machine through the floor drain. Resistance was encountered at the trap. After working the cable through the obstruction, standing water began to drain.
Material retrieved on the cleaning head included a zip tie, plastic and pieces of foam. The technician then continued mechanical cleaning to break down additional buildup while flushing the line. This record documents material actually removed; it does not establish how that debris entered the drain or every condition farther along the pipe.
Why the visit continued after water began moving
The first sign of flow was followed by further cleaning and testing. The technician flushed the drain with several buckets of water, then ran water continuously for approximately ten minutes. The service report records proper drainage before departure and cleanup of the work area.
A useful service handoff explains what was done, what was tested and what remains recommended. In this case, drainage was restored at completion. That result does not guarantee the drain can never block again.
The strainer recommendation was a separate step
The technician recommended installing a floor-drain strainer to help keep loose debris from entering. The record does not show a strainer installation, so it is a recommendation rather than completed work.
For a similar property, ask which strainer suits the existing drain and who will check and clean it. Keep that maintenance responsibility clear in the work order or property handoff. A strainer does not replace evaluation of a drain that is already backing up.
What to tell dispatch about a floor-drain backup
Describe the symptoms you can observe safely. You do not need to identify the obstruction before arranging a visit.
- Is water still rising, and is one drain or more than one fixture affected?
- Does the backup coincide with particular equipment operating?
- Has this drain been cleared before, and how long did the result last?
- Who can provide access to the mechanical room and approve work?
- Were any drain products used, and are prior service notes available?
