A disposal connection can leak even when the sink drains
A San Diego kitchen-sink leak was traced to the disposal gasket and retaining ring. Learn what to report and why testing the repaired connection matters.

A sink that drains can still have a leaking connection underneath it. On September 23, John Ciampoli Plumbing responded to a San Diego kitchen-sink leak and found water pooling around the garbage disposal gasket. The documented problem was the connection's seal, not a recorded drain blockage.
What the inspection found
The service notes identified a retaining ring that was not fully engaged and a gasket that was not sealing properly. Those findings came from an onsite inspection. Water under another sink could have a different source, so the location of a puddle alone is not a diagnosis.
When requesting service, explain whether water appears while the faucet runs, while the sink empties or when the disposal operates. Also report whether drainage is normal or slow. A photo taken from a safe, accessible position may help show the area, but it does not replace inspection.
What was repaired in this job
The technician removed the disposal to access the connection, cleaned the gasket and retaining ring, dried the unit and reinstalled it with the gasket positioned and the ring engaged. The notes document reinstallation of the existing disposal, not installation of a new appliance.
This is a description of completed professional work, not a do-it-yourself disassembly guide. Stop using a fixture that is actively leaking, keep away from wet electrical components and ask for service. Do not reach into a disposal or assume a hidden connection only needs tightening.
The result was checked under use
The technician filled and drained the sink while observing the connection. A second test included operating the disposal. The completion report says no leakage or operating issue was observed during those tests.
Testing matters because a dry connection at rest and a connection that remains dry during use are different observations. The report describes the result at the time of service; it is not a lifetime guarantee. If moisture returns, report when it appeared and the earlier repair date.
Prepare access and a useful service history
If it is safe, clear ordinary stored items from the cabinet before the appointment so the technician can see the plumbing. Leave the equipment and its connections intact. Tell the dispatcher about recent sink, countertop or disposal work and any known electrical or water-isolation concern.
