Water Heater Anode Inspection & Replacement

Many storage water heaters use an anode to help protect the tank from corrosion. The applicable inspection interval and replacement part depend on the model and water conditions. Not every heater uses the same anode design, and a universal replacement schedule should not be assumed.

Provide the heater model and service history. Tell the dispatcher about limited clearance above the unit, previous anode work, water treatment equipment or changes in hot-water color or odor. These observations help plan inspection; they do not prove an anode is the only cause.

Ask whether inspection is appropriate for the heater's condition, which manufacturer-compatible part is proposed and whether other findings change the repair decision. An anode replacement does not repair a leaking tank shell or guarantee removal of an odor. Keep a record of the part installed and the next inspection recommendation.
