Don’t Let Clogged Drains Haunt Your Halloween: A San Diego Fall Checklist

A little preparation can keep the spooky surprises in your decorations. Check private outdoor drains, keep cleanup debris out of the sink and plan service before a recurring problem disrupts the party.

The ghost on your porch is supposed to be there. Water pooling at your doorway is a different kind of surprise. Before Halloween guests arrive, give your property’s drains a quick, safe walkthrough. This seasonal checklist is for San Diego County homeowners, businesses and property managers who want to spot problems early and know what to tell a plumber. It is a preparation reminder, not a forecast that a storm is approaching.

1. Give the decorations room—and the drains a clear path

Walk the accessible outdoor areas in daylight before putting out pumpkins, display bases and loose decorations. Locate private patio drains, driveway channels and other known drainage paths. Place decorations where they will not cover an inlet or become loose debris nearby.

Sweep up leaves and litter that you can safely reach from dry ground. Collect the debris rather than hosing it toward a drain. The City of San Diego recommends sweeping walkways and driveways and placing trash and yard clippings in the appropriate bin. Leave heavy covers, pits, underground spaces and electrical equipment to qualified personnel.

2. Keep pumpkin cleanup out of the plumbing

Set up carving on a tray or covered table so seeds, stringy pulp and candle scraps can be collected before cleanup reaches the sink. Use the appropriate waste container for your local collection program. Keep candy wrappers, disposable wipes and costume accessories out of toilets and drains.

If a kitchen sink already drains slowly, avoid adding more waste or water to demonstrate the problem. Tell dispatch whether one basin or both are affected, whether the disposal runs, and whether water appears underneath. Never reach into a garbage disposal.

3. Notice the pattern before calling it a clog

A grate that looks clean is only the visible part of a drainage system. If you have already noticed repeat puddles, water approaching a doorway or an outdoor drain that empties slowly, note where it happens and when. A blockage is one possibility; the route, condition or capacity of the system may also need assessment.

For indoor trouble, distinguish a drain that backs up from a connection that leaks while water still flows. Do not keep running water to recreate a leak. Photos taken safely before the area worsens can help explain the symptom, but they cannot establish a diagnosis.

Why a cleared drain can still need a separate leak repair

4. Give an HOA or business a simple handoff record

Before an event or a change of shift, identify who is responsible for private drainage maintenance and who can authorize service. County guidance recommends inspecting and cleaning private drainage systems before the rainy season and after storm events, with neighbors or an HOA involved where appropriate.

Keep a short record of the drain location, observed symptom, last known service and access arrangements. Include whether a gate, loading area or occupied unit affects access. Ask the service proposal to explain the work, checks and any exclusions; cleaning alone is not a guarantee against flooding.

Plan commercial and property-management plumbing service

  • Name one person to coordinate access and approval.
  • Share previous reports and recurring problem locations.
  • Ask what the completed visit established and what still needs follow-up.

5. Know when the Halloween checklist should stop

Do not enter a flooded area, open a manhole or handle equipment near standing water. Keep people away from backups and water near electrical equipment. If there is an immediate threat to safety, use emergency services rather than trying to finish a maintenance check.

For a suspected public storm-drain problem, contact the responsible city or county agency. John Ciampoli Plumbing can discuss service for privately maintained drains and plumbing; public infrastructure and private systems have different maintenance responsibilities. The County’s Private Drainage Guide below can help you start that distinction.
